Is It My Thyroid?

It's frustrating to feel tired... and outright exhaustion can prevent you from taking care of needed tasks and affect your work performance. You're eating well, go to bed at a normal time... why is this happening? It could be your thyroid gland. Suboptimal thyroid levels are undertreated! While you may have been told your TSH is in the "normal" range, the fact is the best level can vary greatly by person. If you have symptoms of hypothyroidism, further testing could determine you could benefit from treatment. While in the range your insurance company or internist many think is best for you, there are studies exploring and successfully bringing wellness to people by treating symptomatic men and women with levels that are lower than the text book ranges. Multiple factors and laboratory results should be explored to get the true picture of what your body is telling you, not just one level -- TSH, T3, T4, Ferritin, Selenium, Vitamin D... there are many colors used when you paint a picture!

Symptoms

There are both outward symptoms and self-experienced symptoms with suboptimal thyroid levels. Common symptoms include thinning hair, fatigue, dry skin, cold intolerance, weight gain, brain fog and anemia. Women are affected more often than men... add irregular periods to the list. Sometimes the symptoms can be subtle and easily missed... or mistaken for something else. When that vitamin B still isn't making you feel better, maybe it is your thyroid asking for a boost!

Mental Health

One reason thyroid optimization is something we explore and treat at OMHW, is the link to mental health. Those feelings of depression, fatigue, inability to do the things you used to love... it absolutely could be depression. But what if the reason you never seem to be getting better is because no one has really listened or dug deeper into the root of the problem? The symptoms of depression, and some symptoms of anxiety, are also commonly found in suboptimal thyroid.

Treatment

The good news is there is help. Bio-identical hormones can boost the thyroid hormones you need, be it TSH, T4, or maybe its Selenium to convert T4 to T3.  You deserve to feel good and healthy... to have energy to do what brings you joy. Find a provider that will help you with individualized care; not try to fit the symptoms into a box to move to the next person as quickly as possible.

There is no way to get around it... what you eat is a major factor in your health. More and more research points to diet as a major source of overall health. A great ingredient to include in your cooking staples is fish. Omega-3 is well known as a a healthy nutrient found in fish that helps with cardiovascular health including improved cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and reduced oxidative damage. But there are other vital nutrients as well. Selenium is recommended to help regulate thyroid function, which affects every organ in the body. It supports a healthy cardiovascular system and may help prevent some cancers. You are also getting protein which we need for proper healing and cell regeneration. Plus many varieties, like Salmon, will give a boost of vitamins B & D. And don't forget the anti-inflammatory qualities! Two servings of fish per week can reduce the risk of death by disease by 18%. In a world where there is new and needed focus on sustainability, over fishing has come to light as an issue we should all be aware of. Look to purchase from sustainable markets, including local and line caught fish. For more information, check out the links below.
